Session Overview:

This training program offers a crucial platform for professionals to explore and address key issues related to disaster resilience and climate risk management in Sri Lanka. The program aligns with European Union-funded FOUNTAIN Projects’ focus on climate change adaptation, agro-food sustainability, and disaster risk reduction. Furthermore, the program complements ADRiMP’s mission by promoting sustainable practices and innovative solutions. This one-day full program seeks to extend its impact to industrial sectors and support business resilience in the face of climate challenges.

  • Acts as a knowledge hub fostering research, innovation, and collaboration, while integrating national efforts with regional and global initiatives.
  • Enhances institutional capacity through effective networking, financial resource mobilization, and the establishment of a dedicated learning institute.
  • Equips professionals with the tools and knowledge necessary to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change on agriculture and food systems.

· Discussion (30 minutes)

–          Host by Ms. Dilini Liyanage, Verification Executive, and Mr. Dinidu from the Sri Lanka Climate Fund

–          Divide participants into 4 groups (6 people per group).

–          Each group will be assigned a disaster scenario as given below.

–          In their groups, participants should discuss and brainstorm the following key points.

· Poster Presentation (15 minutes)

–          Each group will present a 3-minute summary of their discussion using the stationary we provide at the moment, designing a poster.

–          Participants should discuss practical solutions for their assigned disaster scenario, focusing on immediate and long-term strategies to improve resilience.

–          Groups to envision the country’s future (year 2050) if their adaptation strategies are implemented, highlighting potential improvements in disaster resilience, sustainable agriculture, and food security.

Flooding

–          Flood Resilience: Structural defenses, flood barriers, drainage systems.

–          Flood Early Warning Systems: Predictive models, real-time monitoring.

–          Urban Flood Management: Sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS), permeable surfaces.

–          Disaster-Resistant Infrastructure: Elevated buildings, flood-proof homes.

–          Water Management: Catchment management, rainwater harvesting.

–          Community Preparedness: Evacuation plans, public awareness campaigns.

Droughts

–          Drought-Resilient Agriculture: Drought-tolerant crops, soil moisture conservation.

–          Water Resource Management: Efficient irrigation systems, water storage.

–          Sustainable Groundwater Use: Recharge areas, rainwater harvesting.

–          Adaptive Farming Practices: Crop diversification, agroforestry.

–          Climate-Smart Agriculture: Precision farming, water-efficient technologies.

–          Drought Early Warning Systems: Meteorological monitoring, risk assessments.

Landslides

–          Slope Stabilization: Vegetation cover, retaining walls, terracing.

–          Landslide Risk Mapping: Geotechnical surveys, hazard zonation.

–          Early Warning Systems: Slope monitoring, sensor technology.

–          Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction: Capacity building, awareness.

–          Erosion Control: Reforestation, erosion barriers.

–          Post-Landslide Recovery: Rehabilitation, land-use planning.

Rising Sea Levels and Coastal Erosion

–          Coastal Resilience: Seawalls, natural coastal buffers (mangroves, coral reefs).

–          Managed Retreat: Relocation of vulnerable communities.

–          Coastal Ecosystem Restoration: Mangrove reforestation, dune restoration.

–          Sustainable Shoreline Management: Beach nourishment, buffer zones.

–          Disaster-Resilient Coastal Infrastructure: Elevated structures, eco-friendly coastal defenses.

–          Climate Adaptation Planning: Integrated coastal zone management, long-term policies.
